Damanhur is a commune, ecovillage, and spiritual community founded in 1975 in the northern Italy.
The Federation it’s born under the inspiration of Oberto Airaudi, that in August of 1978, at the age of 24, began building a massive underground temple.
Airaudi chose to keep the project a secret from the government, but he involved others who he felt understood his vision. It begun as a group of about 24, and than this number has grown to 800 by the years, which enlightened and pragmatic vision created a fertile reality based on solidarity, sharing, love, and respect for the environment.
The Italian police showed up 14 years after secret construction was begun, demanding to see the temple. When they were taken down into the massive and intricately decorated complex they were stunned. The underground temple spreads over 8,500 cubic metres on five different levels, connected to one another by hundreds of metres of corridors.
The Temples of Humankind symbolically represent the inner rooms inside every human being are, therefore they are a massive collection of subterranean temples, buried 100 ft underground, built and decorated in several motifs and entirely in secret by a group of non-architects.
Respect for the environment is one of the foundations of the Damanhurian thought. Damanhurians cultivate organic food and livestock, restructure and build according to green building principles, have design and installation companies in the field of renewable energy and prefer natural healing methods and a holistic view of medicine. This is an example of a collective dream transformed into reality thanks to the creative power of positive thought.
Every year Damanhur welcomes thousands of visitors from all over the world to experience the social model, study the philosophy and to meditate in the Temples of Humankind which many have called the ‘Eighth wonder of the world’.
